I have written the first sentence of the second draft!
I am secretly happy with my progress so far, actually. (Don’t tell my inner critic.) I have completed the character summaries, most of the glossary stuff, and have outlined the second draft up to Chapter 17. I don’t know how many chapters there will be total, but I think I’m only going to outline up to Chapter 20 (the last in Part 1) before I write more. I want to make sure this new version works, one Part at a time. Part 1 is going to work up to where the first draft began, so the second draft is going to be… *cough*… quite long. However, I’m not going to view it as a whole just yet, only in parts so I don’t get overwhelmed. I have planned eight parts total, but I may condense a couple of them as I progress through the story.
This new version is going to be darker than the first. I don’t think this story will work if I allow it to be light-hearted or comedic. It’s going to deeply explore themes about death and revenge and survival, and I don’t plan on holding back too much on the violence. I’m a little scared, lol. Don’t worry, though, it’s not going to get so dark and dreary that there won’t be moments of reprieve here and there. I don’t like stories that are all doom and gloom. Hopefully I’ll be able to strike the right balance with this draft.
Secrets of Volenin is going to take a lot out of me, I can tell. But I think you will like it. I just hope I can do the ideas swimming in my head justice. 😉
Here are a few more details that might intrigue you:
There will be…
- Monsters, obviously.
- Magic with stringent rules and unlimited potential.
- Multiple villains, male and female.
- Multiple heroes, each with a unique role to play.
- Strange weather and a very tall Mountain.
- A deaf, autistic side character.
- Seeds of romance that will grow in subsequent volumes.
- International and interdimensional conflict.
- A royal ball!
- And moral ambiguity.
So, I’ve got a lot of work to do! I’ll keep updating you every other week on my progress. Maybe in two weeks I’ll have an actual word count to report! 🙂
