Life Update #1

Happy Friday! This “Life Update” series is going to be structured somewhat like journal entries. I’ll try to keep them short. The reason I am starting this series is to occasionally update you, the reader, on who I am as a person and what I am doing. Someday, it might be useful to know these things. Maybe these will spark interesting discussions! haha

Who am I?

If you have read my About page, then you would know that I am a fully-formed person, although I am quite short, slightly below the average height for American females. I am single, very single (as in: I haven’t been on a date in almost two years), and am often sad and lonely. I want more than anything to marry an amazing guy and have children. As a young, inexperienced person, however, I understand the value of patience, and I am willing to work toward other goals until a worthy man comes along. These goals include: (1) becoming a moderately successful author, (2) getting in optimal physical shape, (3) maintaining positive relationships with my immediate family members, and (4) gaining as much spiritual and worldly knowledge as I can so I am prepared for life away from home and motherhood. These are the goals I am going to address in every life update so I can keep track of my progress.

Goal #1: Becoming a moderately successful author.

What do I mean by “moderately successful”? Well, I want to earn just enough from writing that I can make it a career. In other words, I am not interested in pursuing other jobs to get by. I am interested in writing books. I don’t care about being rich or famous, but I want to focus on writing. I have so many ideas for new books that I could write forever and never run out of them. I think this is a worthy goal, so I am going to pursue it with full gusto. I know it isn’t going to be easy to achieve, especially with my level of anxiety. I hate promoting myself in person or online. Absolutely hate it. I am still learning how to do it properly. But I will do it if it means I can keep writing.

Goal #2: Getting in optimal physical shape.

Six months ago, I weighed between 145-148 pounds (my weight fluctuates day to day). That is technically overweight for a girl my height (5’2). I wasn’t eating very well, and I wasn’t exercising. I realized that if I want to attract a man who is healthy and in shape, then I better match it, so I planned a diet and exercise routine and have stuck to it religiously since. I haven’t eaten desserts since March. I cut my carb intake in half. I count calories using the MyFitnessPal app. I exercise 30 minutes a day, 6 days a week. As a result, I have lost 20 pounds. I plan to lose at least another 10 by the new year. I have also been working on gaining muscle. With my size and genetics, this has been incredibly difficult (progress has been agonizingly slow), but I feel much better and motivated to keep going.
Last month, I started intermittent fasting (16 hours/day after dinner), because I hit a two-month plateau and thought it wouldn’t hurt to try. I also switched to a more intense exercise regimen that leaves me dripping with sweat after 30 minutes. I am slowly overcoming the plateau.
I am hoping that as I improve myself physically that I will simultaneously decrease my anxiety and frequency of depression.

Goal #3: Maintaining positive relationships with my immediate family members.

This is mostly easy because I love my family and am incredibly fortunate that we are so close. What I need to work on are the attributes and habits that I have developed that cause contention or offense among my family members. I used to be much more easily provoked and offended, and I think I have improved since I made this goal in January. I really want to be more of a peacemaker as well. This is tough for me because I am low in agreeableness, which means I like to be in charge and order people around, and I can be sarcastic at the expense of another’s feelings. Most of the time, my habitual sarcasm and wit are appreciated, but once in a while something will slip out more viciously than intended. Bottom line: I need to be nicer. I guess.

Goal #4: Gaining as much spiritual and worldly knowledge as I can.

I am single. I am not currently in school. I have a lot of freedom. What better way to use it than acquiring knowledge in my spare time? As a religious person, this includes knowledge of the scriptures and spiritual things in addition to subjects of the temporal world: science, history, economics, etc. I am working on a schedule that will enable me to achieve this goal alongside the authoring thing. Both take more time and energy than I currently have at my disposal.

What am I doing?

Right now I am rereading Burning Space before I upload the final version to Kindle Direct Publishing so those who have pre-ordered it can receive it on October 12th. Tomorrow (Oct. 6th), I am going to Salt Lake City with my younger sister to hear Dr. Jordan Peterson speak. I have been listening to him since February and have changed for the better as a result. I am really excited to see him in person.

Next week I am going to continue full-speed ahead with Gray Haze and blogging. On October 12th, I am planning the e-book release party of Burning Space. I am still debating what that is going to entail. Maybe I’ll record a video…
